Men see higher mortality risk following bariatric surgery

A study presented during the virtual European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) meeting noted that among around 20,000 patients who had undergone bariatric surgery, men had a five-times higher death rate within 30 days of undergoing the surgery in comparison with women (0.48% vs 0.08%, P<0.001). This amounts to 25 deaths among males compared to 12 deaths among female patients.

Among the men undergoing bariatric surgery, 3.4% died during follow-up, compared to 1.3% of women. Additionally, men overall had a 2.7-fold higher mortality risk following bariatric surgery compared with women over a mean follow-up of 5.4years (0.64% vs 0.24%). Men also had a significantly higher rate of death on the day of the surgery (0.29% vs 0.05%)… (Medpage Today)
